IT Service Management (ITSM) is concerned with delivering and supporting IT services that are appropriate to the business requirements of the organisation. The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) defines and documents the ITSM processes that need to be performed to ensure that high quality service delivery. ITIL is the de-facto standard approach to ITSM and has been endorsed by a wide range of companies world-wide. ITIL consists of a range of modules, aimed at addressing the issues facing ITSM. The modules provide codes of best practice in ITSM. By making use of ITIL an IT organisation is able to facilitate the quality management of IT service, to improve efficiency, increase effectiveness and reduce risks. ITIL was developed by the Office of Government Commerce in the UK (formerly known as CCTA).
BSI 15000 was published in November 2000. It is based on ITIL and specifies the service management processes needed to provide a quality IT Service. Many organisations are working on an 'early adapters' programme. BSI approached ESBI Computing, with an invitation to take part in the early adapters programme and feed-back issues, findings and comments to BSI.
BSI have published a workbook that is intended to help organisations assess the extent to which they have implemented accepted best practice in IT service management into their processes.
