ESBIC launches new Interactive Wind Mapping for DETI

May 2004

ESBI Computing has recently completed a new web-based interactive map for Northern Ireland's Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) and Action Renewables, which allows users to determine average wind speeds in any part of Northern Ireland. The map was developed as part of the work to assess the extent of Northern Ireland's natural renewable energy potential.

The web-based interactive map was launched at the Balmoral show (Northern Ireland's annual Agricultural show) last week with great success; Deputy Secretary of DETI Wilfie Hamilton stated that "The Wind Map is an extremely useful tool for windfarm developers, for individual businesses and indeed for anyone interested in assessing the wind potential in a specified location in Northern Ireland".

The comprehensive solution delivered by ESBI Computing provides the user with wind speed values at different heights above ground level - 30m, 75m and 100m onshore and 50m, 75m and 100m offshore. These values can be used, as an indication of the potential for erecting a viable wind turbine on the site in addition research of actual on-site measurement wind speeds should be conducted.

ESBI Computing has much experience in the web-mapping environment and has developed its own off-the-shelf application for delivering Web solutions called GeoXplorer™. ESBI Computing has implemented web-mapping solutions for a number of organisations internationally including Forfás, ESB International, ESB Telecoms, BAA, Taylor Nelson Sofres and Cardiff City Council.
