GIS moves towards mainstream IT

Over the last 20 to 30 years Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology has steadfastly provided tools for the collection, storage, management, analysis and reporting of spatial information. GIS technology has provided many governments and other organisations with an opportunity to introduce major improvements in traditional methods and procedures of providing services to citizens and customers.

Until recently, GIS was viewed as the domain of the technically sophisticated IT and spatial data professionals. However, the use of Internet and related web technologies for accessing spatial data as well as for performing basic spatial query and analysis has opened the world of GIS to the masses. The powerful analysis and visualisation capability of GIS is now available to a wider range of commercial and government organisations than ever before.

Accessible, scalable and affordable solutions

Many organisations that have implemented GIS solutions quickly realise that the true value of the GIS is associated with the data, therefore it is imperative that users are able to easily access this data. In order to do this you need a web application that provides much more than just simple view and query access to your existing GIS data.

The Internet and associated technologies are making it possible to design and deploy very affordable and scaleable applications using GIS visualisation and analysis technology. The intuitive user interface of a Web browser is allowing users with limited technical skills to gain access to large amounts of data and to analyse, interrogate and use the outcomes of sophisticated queries as a matter of routine. The result is more rapid and informed decision-making - which translates into higher revenue growth and greater cost reduction.

Centralised data seen in new ways

With traditional desktop-based GIS it can be difficult to make your information available to all your users - or indeed, islands of data and information may exist due to a lack of a central database and visualisation capability. The ability to quickly and easily disseminate spatial data via existing web architectures is enormously powerful and has the potential to minimise many of these limiting factors associated with traditional GIS architectures. Web-based mapping is the fastest growing segment of the spatial-software market. For some applications, web-based applications can provide map visualisation and analysis at the lowest possible cost per user.

How we can help

ESBI Computing can provide both Intranet (eGIS) and Internet (iGIS) web based mapping solutions that utilise standard browsers. We have developed our own web GIS system called GeoXplorer™ for delivering web based GIS solutions via the Internet or an Intranet. Out team of GIS professionals work with enterprise-wide relational databases including Oracle and SQL Server to feed Internet and desktop GIS applications, thereby helping you make better business decisions through spatial data.

An enterprise web GIS provides benefit to many user groups including:

  • Business Managers & GIS Professionals who now have the ability to quickly and easily disseminate enterprise data via existing web architectures while extending their GIS capabilities throughout the enterprise
  • IT Managers and System Administrators who, instead of installing and supporting GIS applications on multiple desktops, now have the power to configure a single web solution to meet the needs of all enterprise GIS users with a standard web browser, whilst keeping the increase in network traffic to a minimum
