MapInfo® MapXtreme® for Windows® is MapInfo's Web GIS development
environment for Windows. It allows organisations to build their
own Web GIS solutions, with all the associated benefits of web
technology. Developers in these organisations can now access the
latest Internet and mapping technology to deploy location information
to larger numbers over an Intranet or the Internet.
In recognition of the fact that many organisations want to purchase
'off-the-shelf' applications rather that develop their own, at ESBI
Computing we have developed our own very powerful Web GIS solution
- GeoXplorer™ - which is built on top of MapXtreme®
- A stand alone solution
- A platform to build enterprise GIS of MIS
- A solution to integrate with any web application
- An addition to conventional GIS applications.
Please see GeoXplorer™ for more details.

MapInfo® MapXtreme® Java™ Edition is MapInfo's Java Web GIS development
environment. It allows organisations to build their own Java Web
GIS solutions, with all the associated benefits of web technology.
Developers in these organisations can now access the latest Internet
and mapping technology to deploy location information to larger
numbers and varied platforms over an Intranet or the Internet.
Many organisations using spatial-analysis applications have mixed
hardware environments, or prefer UNIX servers for scalability,
performance and reliability. With Java on the server-side, existing
UNIX or Windows NT resources can be used. It is integrated with
Oracle and can run with J2EE compliant application servers and
almost any browser.
When developed using a Java development environment, MapXtreme®
Java™ applications can be migrated and reused regardless of future
hardware or platform choices.
To help users get up and running as fast as possible, MapInfo
includes a rapid prototyping tool and the product ships with Apache
Tomcat 4.0.1 servlet container.

MapBasic is a complete, BASIC-like programming language used
to create custom applications for use with MapInfo® Professional®
or special MapInfo® runtimes. MapBasic extends geographic functionality,
automates repetitive operations, and integrates MapInfo® Professional®
with other applications - quickly and easily.
With MapBasic, a custom application can be as simple as adding
or removing a menu item in MapInfo® Professional® or as sophisticated
as redesigning the entire user interface and extending the functionality
of MapInfo® Professional®.
The MapBasic Integrated Mapping feature allows you to run MapInfo®
Professional® in the background, remaining as a hidden server to
the application - showing the end-user only one application interface.
The Integrated Mapping feature also lets you control MapInfo Professional
through popular development tools such as Visual Basic, PowerBuilder,
Delphi and C++.
- Control MapInfo Professional through OLE Automation
- Add mapping to your Visual Basic application with as little
as five lines of code
- Create MapInfo windows inside other custom programs.
- Program in development environments of your choice. If you're
a C++ programmer, you can do all of your coding in C++
You can use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) to communicate with other
software packages. Plus, MapBasic applications can call routines
in Windows Dynamic Link Libraries (DLL) files.

MapInfo® MapX® Mobile is a development tool for creating map-based
applications for mobile workers. Applications that are built with
MapInfo® MapX® Mobile leverage the Pocket PC Windows OS, running
on devices such as the Compaq iPAQ and HP® Jornada. This specialised
version of the popular MapInfo® MapX® ActiveX Control can be used
to bring existing map-based applications onto mobile devices,
or to create new applications.
Benefits of MapX® Mobile:
- Applications work anywhere-indoors, outdoors, rural or urban-they
don't require wireless connectivity
- The application and data reside on the device
- Any and all data can be synchronised with the desktop, including
MapInfo .TAB and .GST files
- Applications can connect to Pocket Access and Microsoft® SQLTM
Server 2000 Windows CE Edition
- Applications created with MapInfo MapX Mobile can also receive
content via a wireless connection.
For example, an application written with MapX Mobile can display
maps generated by MapInfo MapXtreme, MapInfo's Internet/Intranet
mapping application server
